March is National Nutrition Month

It’s the middle of March- have you been thinking about your family’s diet and nutrition? To get in to the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day this weekend, why not try to get everyone to eat more colors out of the rainbow?


The theme for National Nutrition Month with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietics is “Get your plate in Shape.” We think one of the best and easiest ways to get more vitamins and nutrients pumping through your body is by adding a greater variety of colors to your plate! According to the CDC, fruits and vegetables contain essential vitamins, minerals and fiber that may help protect you from chronic diseases. People who eat more generous amounts of fruits and veggies as part of a healthful diet are likely to have reduced risk of stroke, other cardiovascular diseases, and certain cancers.

If you’re looking down at bowl of pasta with butter, take a moment to read over the benefits of all the colors of fruits and veggies to inspire yourself to “Get your plate in shape!”

Red: These foods are a good source of antioxidants and Vitamin A. They help reduce risk of prostate cancer, lower blood pressure, support joint tissue, ward off inflammation and help prevent urinary tract infections.

Orange & Yellow: These foods offer vitamin C and potassium. They help lower LDL cholesterol and blood pressure, promote collagen formation and healthy joints, fight harmful free radicals, encourage alkaline balance, and work with magnesium and calcium to build healthy bones.

Green: These foods are a good source of iron and calcium. They reduce cancer risks, lower blood pressure and LDL cholesterol levels, normalize digestion time because they’re high in fiber, support retinal health and vision, fight harmful free-radicals, and boost the immune system.

Blue & Purple: These foods contain anthocyanins, which have been shown to boost levels of brain chemicals that influence memory and learning and promote healthy aging of the eyes. They also boost immune system activity, support healthy digestion, improve calcium and other mineral absorption, fight inflammation and reduce tumor growth.
