Ways to Lead the Conversation

Discussions between teachers and students should:

  • Include developmentally appropriate topics
  • Focus on questions the child has
  • Use accurate information to talk with the child
  • Talk about healthy lifestyles and that underage drinking and healthy lifestyles don’t mix
  • Revisit the topic at another point in time, this should not be a one-time discussion
  • Empower students understand that they are in control of the healthy lifestyle choices that they make
  • Don’t simply use scare tactics, but rather focus on the positives of saying yes to a healthy lifestyle

School Programs should support staff in these discussions by:

  • Always inform parents when these topics are discussed and what information was shared
  • Discuss teaching points with staff at a meeting to ensure that information is consistent and accurate
  • Follow up discussions/feedback at PTA/PTO meetings is a great way to keep all stakeholders involved
  • Utilize resources within the building such as the counselor, physical education teacher, and school nurse
  • Revisit the topic at another point in time, this should not be a one-time discussion
