Mia Hamm’s Celebrity Soccer Challenge Comes to DC
We had some celebrities in town this weekend here in the DC area! After Manchester United beat out Barcelona FC at FedEx Field, home of the Washington Redskins, on Saturday night, Mia Hamm’s Fourth Annual Celebrity Soccer Challenge was held at Kastles Stadium Sunday morning.
The match served to raise awareness for bone marrow donations as Hamm lost her adopted brother to a rare blood disease in the late ’90s. She started the Mia Hamm Foundation as a way to give back and hosts this game with her husband Nomar Garciaparra each year.
Hamm’s team, FC Mia, played against Garciaparra’s Nomar United, with both team’s rosters filled with national athletes and local celebrities: US Women’s National Soccer team members Alex Morgan, Ali Kreiger, Heather O’Reilly, and Tobin Heath; NBA stars Kobe Bryant and Jeff Green; current and former Redskins Charles Mann, D’Angelo Hall, and Heath Schuler; Capitals defensemen John Carlson; former DC United standout Eddie Pope; as well as local media anchors Steve Buckhantz, Dan Hellie, Ivan Carter, and Britt McHenry.
FC Mia ended up winning in overtime 13-12, but it was certainly a fun day of philanthropy for everyone involved! Way to go Mia!
