Thanks, Beckendorff Junior High!

May 29th, 2013

Yesterday, Ask Listen Learn headed down to Katy, TX to visit Beckendorff Junior High! Joining us for another awesome event was Congressman Pete Olson, who spoke to 500 7th graders about the importance of living a healthy lifestyle and the dangers of underage drinking.

We learned that the students recently engaged in a letter-writing exercise to their Congressmen about social issues, especially alcohol awareness. So, it was no wonder Congressman Olson got such a very warm welcome! He reminded the students that drinking under the age of 21 was a crime with costly penalties and even jail time.

He then shared a personal story about a friend of his from high school who lost her life because she chose to drink and drive unfortunately. His dream, he said, was that no one would ever feel the pain again of losing a friend to making bad choices, which is exactly why he was so excited to visit the energetic students.

He went on to encourage them to take three important steps to counter peer pressure:

  1. Ask their parents about alcohol. He said that students need to be leaders in their families, too.
  2. Listen to their parents when they talk to them. Ask more questions and listen well.
  3. Learn from their parents and friends, and especially the Ask, Listen, Learn program.

Thanks so much to Beckendorff Junior High, Principal Dickerson and Congressman Olson! We had a great time in Texas, talking to kids about saying NO to underage drinking and YES to a healthy lifestyle.

Our first event with Superstar Ashley Wagner and Rep. Marc Veasey at John Adams Middle School!

May 24th, 2013

Today, Ask Listen Learn headed down to Grand Prairie, TX to visit the students at Grand Prairie Middle School! We were so excited to welcome for the very first time Ashley Wagner, world-renowned champion figure skater! Equally exciting, we also had Congressman Marc Veasey joining us, too! With two great superstars joining us, we really do things bigger in Texas!

First up, we had Congressman Veasey talk to us about making good choices and saying no to peer pressure. Congressman Veasey encouraged students to talk to their teachers about the importance of saying no to underage drinking and saying yes to a healthy lifestyle. He even polled the students to test their knowledge on how quickly alcohol affects the body. Did you know it takes only 30 seconds?! The students at John Adams did!

Then, Ashley talked to the middle schoolers about what it takes to stay committed to your goals. She even shared with us that she stayed on track to achieve her dreams of being an Olympic athlete by being a good role model for her brother Austin, who’s just two years younger than her. She encouraged the students to be good role models for their friends, siblings and all younger kids— as we know 8thgrade students are special leaders!

Next, we had our student volunteers play our awesome Ask, Listen, Learn game. Cheered on by Ashley and Congressman Veasey, the students ran superfast and answered questions about how alcohol negatively affects their bodies and lives. We really loved visiting, Grand Prairie Middle School. To end our morning, the students got to ask fun questions of Congressman Veasey and Ashley. We learned that Ashley loves fruit smoothies as her favorite healthy snack, and that Congressman Veasey likes to lift weights and do cardio to stay in shape.

Thanks again to Ashley Wagner, Congressman Veasey and all the great students and staff for a really fun day!

Thank you, Spring Branch Middle!

May 11th, 2012

Today we were in Houston, Texas with Superstar Steven Lopez at Spring Branch Middle School. 750 6th and 7th graders packed into the auditorium to listen to Steven talk about the discipline takes for him to make good choices and live a healthy lifestyle as he trains with his family each and every day.

Our student volunteers did a great job playing our Xavix game and winning bags and sunglasses after Steven showed off some kicks. Steven said he remembered how much peer pressure there was in middle school, but he focused on his tae kwon do and dreams of making it to the Olympics. He said his mom always told him, “It’s not an easy path to be the BEST!”

Thank you to Dr. Williams and all the teachers and students for hosting us today. Always remember to say YES to a healthy lifestyle, and NO to underage drinking!
