Congressman Gerlach: Success is more than just nice cars and a big house

May 30th, 2013

Today, Ask, Listen, Learn headed to the northeast to Exton, PA to visit 500 8th graders at Lionville Middle School! Joining us for this great event, we had Congressman Jim Gerlach to help us raise awareness about the dangers of underage drinking.

Congressman Gerlach talked to the students about how to succeed in life. He reminded the students that success is measured in more than just nice cars or a big house. He shared that it’s what students do in life that makes them successful— and that starts with making good decisions.

He challenged the students to work hard in life, and that the middle schoolers should stay on the right track, and help their friends to do the same.

He encouraged the Lionville 8th graders to talk to teachers, coaches and their parents about how to say NO to underage drinking and YES to a healthy lifestyle. He reminded them to think twice because the decisions they make today will influence who they are tomorrow.

Thank you, Lionville Middle School and Congressman Gerlach, for another awesome Ask, Listen, Learn event!

A doubleheader with Congressman Dent

May 20th, 2013

Today, Ask Listen Learn traveled to Hummelstown, PA to visit Lower Dauphin Middle School! Joining us for another fantastic event was Pennsylvania Congressman Charles Dent, who spoke to two groups of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders about the importance of living a healthy lifestyle and the dangers of underage drinking.

As a member of Congress, Congressman Dent is lawmaker and sees how people’s lives are negatively affected when they break the law because of alcohol. It’s especially important for kids who are underage to take the drinking law seriously, because the choices we make today will impact the rest of our lives. Part of making good choices is talking to role models about living a healthy lifestyle. The Congressman said he talks to his own middle school children about saying NO to underage drinking a lot and encouraged the kids to talk to their parents about the peer pressures they face every day.

Thanks so much to Lower Dauphin Middle School, Principal Berra, and Congressman Dent! We loved visiting Hummelstown and talking to kids about saying NO to underage drinking and YES to a healthy lifestyle.

Thank you, Central Mountain Middle School!

May 21st, 2012

With just a few weeks to go before the end of the school year, the Ask, Listen, Learn team is kicking things into high gear!  We started today at Central Mountain Middle School in Mill Hall, PA, with ALL first-timer Representative Glenn “GT” Thompson.  The 300 8th graders gave Rep. Thompson a warm welcome with their energy and enthusiasm, and our student volunteers did a great job showing off our Xavix game!

Thanks again to Principal Mark Rowedder for inviting us, and to all of the students and teachers for making us feel right at home.  As summer approaches, don’t forget to say YES to a healthy lifestyle and NO to underage drinking!

Wrap-up: Apolo In Pittsburgh and Providence

November 8th, 2010

Sunday night, Apolo Ohno and The Century Council were at Joseph-Beth Booksellers in Pittsburgh PA. Apolo was promoting his book, Zero Regrets, and also spoke to a group of kids about making healthy choices in life and saying no to underage drinking.

Apolo Ohno shared his message with 12 kids from The Beverly Jewel Wall Lovelace Children’s Program, which promotes children’s safety and well-being within their community. The kids were full of question for Apolo, ranging from his upbringing as a young kid to becoming an Olympic medalist. Apolo answered them all and left the kids with autographed books and Ask, Listen, Learn bookmarks!

The kids have an extra incentive to read through the book; They’re having an essay contest based on the book, and the winner will receive a prize! Good luck kids of BJWL!

Apolo Anton Ohno stops in Philly!

April 14th, 2010

Apolo Anton Ohno today visited La Salle Academy in inner-city Philadelphia today, joined by kids from St. Malachy School, St. Laurentius School, San Miguel School, and Hope Partnership for Education. Many of these kids’ potential is limited by social, academic, or financial challenges. Apolo reached out to them, telling them that as long as they stayed focused and driven to succeed, nothing could stand in their way.

“I don’t know what’s going on with you and what your situation is, but it’s not over until it’s over. I may start off the race at the back of the pack, but at the end of the race, I win it.”

This is why we believe partnering with athletes like Apolo is so important. When an eight-time Olympic medal winner, himself the child of a single parent, is telling you that saying ‘YES’ to a healthy lifestyle and ‘NO’ to underage drinking will help them accomplish their goals, they’ll believe it.

Thanks to everyone at La Salle Academy for such a great event! You rock.
