We hopped around D.C. with Ashley Wagner today!

April 21st, 2014

How did we spend our Monday? By watching the President and First Lady along with our Superstar Ashley Wagner say YES to a healthy lifestyle at the 136th White House Easter Egg Roll!

While on the South Lawn, we heard from our Nation’s leaders about the importance of being healthy; as the theme for this year was “Hop into Healthy, Swing into Shape.” Ashley spent the beautiful Washington day with fans and Easter-egg rollers alike, representing Ask, Listen, Learn’s mission of “saying YES to a healthy lifestyle and NO to underage drinking.” First Lady Michelle Obama and President Barack Obama spoke to the thousands of eager ears on the Lawn on the importance of being active; nobody has a better grasp on the positive benefits of staying on a healthy path like Ashley! She interacted with kids and got to really talk with fans about what can happen when you don’t let peer pressures like underage drinking get in your way of your dreams.

“I love getting the opportunity to talk with kids and deliver this message face-to-face,” said the two-time National Champion and Olympic Medalist Ashley Wagner. “How you treat your body is so important and imperative to your success as not only an athlete, but a successful, driven young person.”

The rest of the day was spent with students from Arlington Science Elementary School explaining to their students the importance of saying ‘NO’ to underage drinking. Ashley answered questions from the kids and spoke of her personal experience warding off peer pressures in order to get achieve her goals. Among the other attendees was Senator Barbara Favola (D-VA), Delegate Patrick Hope (D-VA) and Joe Montano from Senator Tim Kaine’s (D-VA) office.

“When you’re an athlete, your body is a machine,” Ashley explained to the students of Arlington Science. “You want the ultimate machine, so you want to take care of it. So I made a lot of important decisions. I ate my fruits and veggies, I drank a lot of water and, when the time came, I said no to underage drinking.”

How do you say ‘NO’ to underage drinking? During Alcohol Awareness Month, be mindful of what sort of peer pressures come your way and what you can do to stay focused on your goals. Ashley wouldn’t be where she is today without the ability to be confident in her smart decisions and she urges YOU to be the best you can be.

Fall Frenzy Fun

November 7th, 2013

Hey team- We don’t want to let another day go by without giving a shout out to DC SCORES for another successful Fall Frenzy this year!

This was their 16th year of their event that brings DC parents and kids together for a day of soccer and all kinds of healthy lifestyle activities. The DC United mascot, Talon, was there, a healthy lunch was provided by Revolution Foods, and face painting, pumpkin crafts and a sweet DJ all rounded out a day of fun at Trinity Washington University.

We were happy to provide educational Ask, Listen, Learn materials to parents and kids at the Fall Frenzy to jumpstart the conversation on underage drinking and encourage all the DC SCORES players to stay on top of their game by saying YES to a healthy lifestyle and NO to underage drinking!

The DC Scores Jamboree was a huge success!

June 3rd, 2013

This past Saturday June 1st was a history-making day for DC youth soccer. The 18th annual DC SCORES Jamboree! brought together over 1,450 DC SCORES participants from 45 elementary and middle schools and all 8 wards of Washington, DC. The students, whose families lined every field, played a collective 148 soccer games, totaling 2,960 minutes of physical activity for the low-income youth. The expansive scene at Anacostia Park on Saturday was astonishing. In addition to 14 soccer fields, present were multiple tents for lunch, healthy snacks, face painting, arts & crafts, coach appreciation, USMNT & USWNT players from the Athletes’ Advisory Council, representatives from Penya Barcelonista club of Washington, and many others.

Among the most popular tents was a parent booth where families learned from bilingual Ask, Listen, Learn materials contributed by The Century Council.  Tough & serious dialogue about underage drinking, and drinking and driving took place in the safe confines of the fun event. Parents and players were rewarded for initiating these challenging conversations with t-shirts and sunglasses donated by The Century Council. Students particularly loved the Ask, Listen, Learn branded sunglasses which sent a very clear message: these students were making the “cool” choice NOT to engage in risky behaviors like underage drinking or riding in a car with an intoxicated driver.  Six lucky families went home with Ask, Listen, Learn game consoles to hook up to their televisions and keep the dialogue going in a fun, active way in their own living rooms.

DC SCORES students play the Ask, Listen, Learn games during soccer practices on rainy days, so winners were elated at the prospect of teaching parents and siblings to play as well. Sending educational materials, gifts, and prizes to DC SCORES program events is a small part of our larger relationship with The Century Council, but it’s one that has a profound impact on thousands of families all over DC. Would you like to help us make a difference? Mark your calendar now for the 19th annual DC SCORES Jamboree! on June 8th, 2014, and we’ll see you out at Anacostia Park!

Take our Daughters and Sons to Work Day RECAP!

May 2nd, 2013

As you’ve probably seen from our tweets and pictures on Facebook, our 6th annual Take our Daughters and Sons to Work Day was a grand success!

We were so happy to have Superstar Aly Raisman in town between her tough Dancing with the Starsrehearsals to join Washington Spirit defender Aly Krieger, Tommy McFLY and Dan Hellie in encouraging kids on Capitol Hill to ‘say YES to a healthy lifestyle and NO to underage drinking’!

Around 300 attendees, including 70 kids, nearly 30 TCC partners and seven members of congress packed the Cannon Caucus Room for a crazy, educational carnival complete with skeeball, basketball, a giant inflatable football toss and the Ask, Listen, Learn interactive game.

After Aly spoke on why she chooses to live a healthy lifestyle, kids and parents went around to each station to collect stickers on their Ask, Listen, Learn pinnies and presented them to Tommy at the scoreboard to tally up donations on behalf of The Century Council to U.S. Capitol Police and DC Scores.

Thank you to everyone who came out for a fantastic day! See you next year!

Why were we at The Pentagon this morning?

October 18th, 2012

This morning we braved security clearance checks and ID checkpoints to enter the prestigious Hall of Heroes at The Pentagon.  Our partner, the Young Marines, were awarded the Secretary of Defense Fulcrum Shield Award.

The Young Marines is a youth education and service program for boys and girls, ages 8 through completion of high school. The Young Marines promotes the mental, moral, and physical development of its members. The program focuses on character building, leadership, and promotes a healthy lifestyle.

The Secretary of Defense Fulcrum Shield Award is awarded to recognize community substance-abuse awareness efforts by youth programs associated with the military services, defense agencies, and the National Guard Bureau.   The award is named in honor of five military personnel from Fort Bliss, Texas who were killed in an aircraft accident in 1999 while on a counter-drug reconnaissance mission in Columbia.

The Young Marines were honored with the Fulcrum Shield Award for their tremendous efforts during Red Ribbon Week 2011.  Their efforts focused on raising awareness regarding the dangers of substance abuse and underage drinking.  Their work included peer-to-peer level education in schools with presentations, bracelets, red ribbons.  In addition, the Young Marines were able to reach over 20,000 students with our Ask, Listen, Learn Kids brochures!  We were thrilled to be a part of their outreach efforts, and even more thrilled to see them recognized for it today!

We congratulate the Young Marines on this prestigious accomplishment!  We know they will continue to serve as leaders in their schools and serve as examples making positive, healthy lifestyle choices.

AG Irvin Nathan – Kids and Alcohol don’t mix

Power Play!

March 13th, 2012

Today, America’s First Lady Michelle Obama is joining Samantha Cameron, wife of British Prime Minister David Cameron and some of our nation’s finest Olympic athletes at American University. The Olympic-themed event is part of Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move Initiative and will celebrate the upcoming 2012 Olympics in London. Students from MacFarland Middle School in Washington, D.C.; Manor View Elementary School in Maryland and Arlington Science Focus School in Virginia get a chance to meet and play with U.S. Olympic athletes such as Lisa Leslie, Lori Lindsey, Becky Sauerbrunn and Dan O’Brien and US Paralympians Kortney Clemons and April Holmes.

The Century Council recognizes that healthy lifestyles help to prevent underage drinking and improve the health of our nation’s children. That’s why we have teamed up with a group of Olympic and Paralympic champions and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE). We are working together to develop and support programs that will increase physical activity among our nation’s youth.

The Century Council will be at Arlington Science Focus School on April 12 with Olympian Steve Lopez for the school’s annual “Choose to Refuse” event.  Steve will speak with the students about healthy lifestyle choices and we’ll play the Ask, Listen, Learn interactive game with all of the fourth graders throughout the day.  For more information on The Century Council’s campaign, visitwww.asklistenlearn.com

Summer with DC Scores!

July 27th, 2011

The Century Council has been a close partner of DC Scores,  and has recognized its Amy Nakamoto as one of its 20 People to Watch. As such, we were excited to visit their great summer program, Couch To Camp. In the past two weeks we visited Tubman Elementary and HD Cooke Elementary School, where the campers were keeping busy learning the fundamentals of soccer and scrimmaging one another.

To go along with the Ask, Listen, Learn message, the kids wrote poems about living a healthy lifestyle. After the writing, they let off some steam on our Ask, Listen, Learn interactive game. We’d like to thank DC Scores for providing area youth with positive activities that reinforce the importance of living a healthy lifestyle!
